Apprenticeship Training Program
The Apprenticeship program is a four year, formalized training program approved by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Apprentices must attend 640 hours of related technical classroom instruction and upto 8,000 hours of on-the-job practical training to graduate.
The apprenticeship program is designed to thoroughly develop the talents and skills of up-and-coming carpenters. The program is a combination of classroom learning and job site employment. Apprentices attend classes for one week every three months, a system designed to accommodate the needs of contractors and apprentices alike. Apprentices receive a minimum of 1,000 hours of work on a job site per year. As a result, apprentices are continuously building upon their knowledge and skill base while solidifying these lessons in a practical job site setting.
The program allows carpenter apprentices to earn wages and benefits that enable them to provide for themselves and their families, while learning from the most-experienced professionals both in the classroom and on-site. Typically, apprentices start around 50% of the journey worker pay scale. As their training progresses, apprentices earn more until they become full carpenters, called “journeymen,” and are then paid at the journeymen rate.

New England Regional Council of Carpenters
The New England Regional Council of Carpenters represents 22,000 carpenters, pile drivers, shop and millmen, and floorcoverers working in the New England states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. There are over 1,300 contractors who have signed agreements with the NERCC – and more are signing every day. We believe that well-paid, well-trained carpenters mean well-made, safe and long-lasting construction.

Whether you are an apprentice or a journeyman, these training sessions programs will help you advance your career and keep your skills current as the construction industry changes.
S.T.E.P. will keep you advancing on the worksite from carpenter, to crew leader, to foreman, to superintendent – perhaps even setting the stage for you to own your own Union contracting company some day.
