Brooke Charter School visits Boston Training Center

On Tuesday May 4th the New England Carpenters Training Fund hosted the Brooke Charter School of East Boston for a visit to the Boston training center.  Thirty 8th grade students and their teachers took part in learning about hand and power tool safety. Instructor Brian Connearney took the kids through some class room work that went along with subpart I Hand and Power Tools from the Osha Standard 1926 Construction. Brian did a demonstration of how to properly use a table saw, chop saw, skill saw and a jig saw. The students then did a hands on project making a handsaw key holder. Assisting Brian were apprentices Adam Hart, Carpenters Local 40 and John Lemieux, Carpenters Local 275. They also had a tour of the training center and saw many things that carpenters do for work. After the projects were done the students had an opportunity to ask questions to the apprentices. The questions ranged from “what’s your favorite tool to use on the job” to “why did you become an apprentice”?

This was a great opportunity for all and the students of Brooke Charter look forward to coming back next year!
